Alabamians urged to review tornado safety rules

February 25, 2009 has been designated as Tornado Awareness Day.   This week has been proclaimed severe weather awareness week in Alabama by Gov. Bob Riley.

Alabamians are urged to review tornado safety guidelines in the event severe weather hazards threatens you and your family.

Alabama has two distinct tornado seasons. The spring season runs from March until May and the fall season runs from November through December. Now is a good time to review your facilities severe weather plan and remember these basic tornado safety tips.

  • If not inside a building, GET INSIDE A BUILDING!
  • Move to the lowest basement or to an interior hallway on the lowest level of the building.
  • Interior stairwells are a good place to use as tornado shelters.
  • Move away from windows.
  • Stay off the elevators; you could be trapped in them if the power is lost.
  • Avoid places with wide-span roofs such as auditoriums, cafeterias, large hallways, or shopping malls.
  • Get under a piece of heavy furniture such as a workbench, heavy table, or desk and hold on to it.
  • If shelter is not available or there is no time to get to shelter, lie in a low ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building (be aware of the potential for flooding).
  • Use arms to protect head and neck.

After a Tornado has passed, Carefully render aid to injured persons, . Stay away from power lines and puddles with wires in them; they may still be carrying electricity! Watch your step and avoid broken glass, nails, and other sharp objects. Stay out of any heavily damaged buildings; they could collapse at any time. Do not use matches or lighters, in case of leaking natural gas pipes or fuel tanks nearby. Remain calm and alert, and listen for information and instructions from emergency crews or local officials.
